Description:

Oblong cut from sheet lead, 60 by 95 mm, with three of its corners trimmed off diagonally, found in 1978 at the temple of Mercury on West Hill. After being inscribed, the tablet was folded five times. Apart from damage at the folds, surface corrosion and a hole, the tablet is in good condition(FN1). One side carries six lines of Old Roman Cursive inscribed by a practised hand.

(FN1) The hole is not a nail hole (the tablet could not have been folded as it was, had it been nailed), but is probably caused by a ‘cold shut’, a casting flaw. It looks as if line 2 deliberately avoids it.
